A couple of years ago, I was invited to speak on CBC Radio to talk about Sleep Tips for “Back to School”. The announcer asked if it was a common problem. I replied, it is an EPIDEMIC.
The reality is that it is getting worse, not better. The amount of distractions keeping us AWAKE are increasing – technology is a blessing and a curse. How many of us have stayed up way too late binge watching our favourite shows or going down the rabbit hole on social media? You can admit it. We have all done it. It’s okay once in awhile, but when it becomes a nightly habit, then it’s a problem. How did you feel the next day? Were you dragging your butt, reaching for sugary foods and caffeine? Did you get to the gym or out for a run? Did you have the patience for your sweet little children when they asked the very same question for the gazillionth time?
The statistics are staggering. A US study has estimated the annual cost of JUST insomnia to be between 9.5 billion and 107.5 billion dollars. Almost one third of people do not get enough sleep, impacting both their physical and mental health. For some crazy reason, we are lead to believe that sleep deprivation is a badge of honour in North America, when it is considered torture in other countries. How many times have you heard someone say, I stayed up late in order to …?
What does all this lack of sleep, and poor sleep quality – including frequent wakes – mean for you and your spouse? Failed marriages. Traffic accidents. Depression and anxiety are on the rise. Poor work productivity and quality, work absences and increased stress. You are also more at risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer and obesity.
Then what do you think all this lack of sleep and poor sleep quality mean for your precious little ones? As Sleep Consultants, we live and breathe this every day. We see babies “cured” of colic, reflux symptoms, poor eating habits, poor weight gain, gassiness. We see “high needs and spirited infants” transformed into “happy, angel, good babies” on a regular basis.
For toddlers and children, their eating habits, attention spans, ability to self-regulate and their ability to focus can change dramatically after only one night of better sleep. Left unchecked, poor sleep in children can lead to anxiety, depression, obesity, and diabetes. Children are often being misdiagnosed as having learning disabilities, ADD or ADHD when all they need is healthy sleep. It breaks my heart to see children pumped with unnecessary medications and over the counter remedies (like melatonin), when all they need is to simply learn HOW to sleep all on their own.
Drug and alcohol abuse is on the rise in our teenage population. Studies have shown that there is a direct correlation with those who do not sleep well.
On March 14, 2008, a group of committed citizens started World Sleep Day. My Dream Team and I are excited to take part in educating and empowering others to TAKE ACTION. Give yourself and your precious little ones this beautiful gift. Do not delay. Babies and children do NOT grow out of their sleep problems, they simply grow INTO new ones.
One of the 10 commandments of sleep hygiene for children, as declared by the World Sleep Day Committee, is to “encourage your child to fall asleep INDEPENDENTLY”.
